Stanford mailing lists should be banned; I receive an average of 250 emails a day, of which only about 20 are of vague interest to me. Today I get 360 emails, and am about to delete them all, when I see this email from Sparkseed:

You have been selected as a semi-finalist in the Sparkseed selection process.

We were impressed by your venture concept and your commitment to make it grow.

We will follow up with you about completing the next steps in the process.

We look forward to hearing more about your venture in the coming weeks.

Congratulations.
Mike Del Ponte
Founder & CEO
Sparkseed
(formerly Conscious Lifestyle)

Sparkseed is a nonprofit organization that “invests in the social entrepreneurs of tomorrow”, and provides guidance, funding and the tools to undergraduate social innovators. I applied a week or so back, writing about the UnseenPeople idea. Now I will have to find out how to manage my looming finals, projects, and the sparkseed application- and the actual development of the UnseenPeople project itself.

In the past, I used to look down on these “development programs”, thinking them unnecessary. Now I realise that was just plain arrogance; my time in Stanford, and in trying to get UnseenPeople off the ground just shows me how much more I need to learn. Building on the wisdom of others, perhaps, is still the easiest way to not fail.
